Indian rummy have a lot of variants out of which pool rummy is the one that is the most commonly played and well-known. This format of the game is played with two to six players and is also called “Syndicate”.

What is Pool Rummy?

Pool Rummy is the most popular variant of Indian Rummy and is played with 2 or 6 players. This format is also known as "Syndicate".

Classic Rummy offers 3 variants of Pool Rummy -

  1. 101 points
  2. 201 points
  3. Best of 3

How is a winning participant arrived in a pool rummy game?

The goal of a game in Pool rummy is to reach the limit of 101 or 201 points last. Which means if a player ends up with the lowest score by the time all the other players reaches the highest point of 101/201 points is the winner. In the best of three games option, a player who has the lowest points at the end of the three games is the winner of the rummy card game. In the pool rummy game, the player who makes a valid show gets zero points and the rest of the points are scored on the number of unused cards they have on hand.

How is the winning amount derived?

Winning amount= The number of participants multiplied by the entry fee with the rake amount deducted from this amount. The winning amount will be credited into the winning player’s account.

More about the rules that apply to 101 pool rummy game:

  1. Participant who has the lowest number of points when all of the participants touch 101 points would be the winner
  2. If a player drops without making a single move, it is called the 1st drop and carries 20 points. A middle drop carries 40 points and the full count score is 80 points at the most
  3. There are two printed jokers and card jokers for all the pool rummy games

To declare a show, you will need to have:

  1. One run without using jokers – you need to have this or you will get a full count of points
  2. Another run with or without a joker – this is also compulsory
  3. The rest of the cards can be melded in sets or runs with or without using jokers
  4. A participant with a valid show gets no points and the other participants get scores based on the unused cards they have in hand.
  5. Scores are added up at the end of each deal and a player who reaches 101 points will be out.
  6. If the participant wants, he or she can rejoin only if no player has points above 79

  1. Participant who has the lowest number of points when all of the participants touch 201 points would be the winner
  2. If a player drops without making a single move, it is called the 1st drop and carries 25 points. A middle drop carries 50 points and the full count score is 80 points at the most
  3. There are two printed jokers and card jokers for all the pool rummy games
  4. To declare a show, you will need to have:

    1. One run without using jokers – you need to have this or you will get a full count of points
    2. Another pure run with or without a joker – this is also compulsory
    3. The rest of the cards can be melded in sets or runs with or without using jokers
    4. A participant with a valid show gets no points and the other participants get scores based on the unused cards they have in hand.
    5. Scores are added up at the end of each deal and a player who reaches 201 points will be out.
    6. If a participant wants, he or she can rejoin only if no player has points above 174

What are the rules of BO3 Rummy ?

  1. Participant who has the lowest points when three games are over is the winner
  2. It is compulsory for all the players in the game to take part in all the three games
  3. A fourth round is used to break the tie when one is declared at the end of three games
  4. If it is found that the gap between the points of 2 players is above 80 after two games, then the player with lower points is the winner. There will be no third round in such cases.
  5. There is no drop option in the best of three games
  6. 80 is the maximum score
  7. There are two printed jokers and card jokers in this game
  8. The participant with valid show gets zero points and the rest have scores that are based on the unused / ungrouped cards they have in hand.
  9. To declare a show, you will need to have:

    1. One run without using jokers – you need to have this or you will get a full count of points.
    2. Another run with or without a joker – this is also compulsory.
    3. The rest of the cards can be melded in sets or runs with or without using jokers.
    4. A participant with a valid show gets no points and the other participants get scores based on the unused cards they have in hand.
    5. There is no option to rejoin in this game variant.
  10. Rejoin option not available.

Some general rules: Beginning of the game:

  1. Two decks consisting of one joker and 52 cards in each.
  2. There is a toss at the start of the game that determines seating and playing order.
  3. Every participant in the game gets 13 cards each. Use of a random number generator algorithm ensures that the distribution of cards is on a random basis.
  4. The card joker is picked at random once the cards are dealt.
  5. An A card will be the deemed card joker in case a printed card is denoted joker during the game.
  6. One card is placed face up in the open slot to start the game.

Game Play

  1. When the turn comes for a player to start playing, he or she can pick the top card from the open or the closed deck
  2. The player must make his or her move within the allotted time
  3. Not picking and discarding a card within the set time would mean that the player has missed a move
  4. Player gets auto dropped if he/she doesn’t respond to their turn in the given turn time
  5. You can see the cards discarded by others in the tab for discarded cards. The cards you discarded and were picked up by others can be identified by the star on them
  6. A joker in the open pile cannot be picked up unless it is the first open card
  7. Once all the cards in the pack are used up, then the open cards are shuffled and used again

Rules for splitting

Split is of two types:

  1. Auto Split
  2. Manual Split

Split Eligibility:

  1. Only Pool games (101 Pool and 201 Pool) Variant is eligible for Split.
  2. Only on 6 player table split is applicable.
  3. Split is applicable only if atleast one player is knocked off from the table.
  4. Split can happen only between 2 or three players.

Auto Split

The prize money is automatically distributed between 2 or 3 players when all the players are in compulsory i.e,. No player can drop his turn.

Manual Split

  1. A Player can request for a split with other players and if other players agree for split request the prize amount will be distributed among the players – this is called Manual split.
  2. A player can request for Manual Split only when maximum no of drops available – minimum no of drops available difference is 2 then manual split is not possible.
